Chris Jarvis, founder of Jarvdesign, (and one of the contributors at our first Pimm's and Portfolios evening), grabs a coffee with Creativepool to talk aesthetics, iMacs and dream re-brands.

What attracted you to Design?
I always said I wanted to be a graphic designer, even before I knew what one was! I love what I do because I'm not stuck doing one thing; I get to play with every part of design: typography, layout and illustration. I'd hate to be a one-trick pony - even if it was a really great pony with a totally impressive trick!
So, tell us what you're doing at the moment?
I'm working at CFA – a marketing communications company - and loving it, doing some great work with construction, architectural, automotive and public sector clients. Outside of CFA I'm on the lookout for creative collaborations and a gallery space to exhibit some work!
What can a prospective customer expect from you?
A good relationship. I like them to know what's going on, how the work's progressing and what I'm thinking. I also like to think I am quite laid back. Clients will always have their own idea of what works, even when it goes against everything you believe in: I just don't let it bother me.
What is the biggest challenge facing designers like yourself?
Standing out from the crowd. The internet has brought more opportunity to showcase work and there are a lot of talented designers around. Whenever you come across something that looks new you then find a flock of other people doing the same thing.
What's been your best project to date?
Probably the Nathan project, for Skinny, for its exposure and what it taught me. I did the design and illustration for a top 40 album and subsequent single releases, along with 12's, all the promo design work, posters, numerous ads and flyers as well as illustrative elements and story boards for TV commercials. It was a load of work for me to handle on my own but taught me a lot.
What's the most important thing you've learned as a Designer?
Know when to stop. Sometimes you just have to step away from the Mac and stop hacking away at a job.
Who inspires you and why?
The guys at Vault49. It was an amazing acknowledgement to have them judge me the winner of the Design category of Thexperiment competition last year. Their work is incredible - mixing photos, type, scanned imagery and vectors. I'm continually impressed with their roster of clients.
What would be your dream project?
I'd like to re-brand the Royal Family! Changing how they are perceived would be a great challenge.
What's your favourite bit of kit?
I'm a typical creative: a Mac friend. I'm loving my iPhone but work-wise I can't be without my iMac and Photoshop.
What do you like about Creativepool?
It's definitely a great hub for networking with creatives. I like the facebook group and the Design news for opportunities, events and competitions.

I like to work in my pants. That's not to say if I'm working in-house for an agency I'll strip down to my tighty whiteys, but when at home...
