Inspiration can come from a variety of different sources. For Marcin Roszkowski and his small company, Vivid Flow Studio, inspiration comes from looking at the world.
Marcin wishes for a better world, one in which we start respecting our planet as our home to aspire to be better human beings. One can argue that, should this dream come true, its effects will also be reflected on creativity and the creative industries as a whole; after all, creativity is about reinvention, change, and sometimes about repurposing the negative toward a positive message.
We've had a nice chat with Marcin to learn more about what brought his company to success, and what his dreams and aspirations are for the future of creativity.
How was your company born and where are you based?
I guess it was a typical start, mainly as a hobby but mostly shooting landscapes for fun and as an excuse to spend time outdoors, hiking and to enjoy nature. At that time, I was afraid even to point a camera at people. With time it gradually became more than just a hobby, I was experimenting shooting different subjects and genres, from still life to portraits and weddings as well as shooting videos. Fast forward few years, and now I run a commercial photography and video production studio in Stoke-on-Trent in the UK. It's been quite a journey, but there is still plenty more to explore and discover.
Can you explain your team’s creative process?
We are trying to understand our clients' needs as much as possible through the use of tailored questions, as well as creating a good level of communication between us. It's important to find out the real goal of the images or videos we will be creating, only that way we can create visuals which will work for our clients. Brainstorming is also a huge part of the process too.
How has technology affected the way you work (if at all)?
It has provided relatively easy access to specialised equipment and software that gives us more creative options than ever before, even though it can be pricy. The fact my second DSLR camera was capable of shooting videos, it caught my interest and helped me to learn new skills and to eventually add video production to services we offer.
What’s your team’s secret to staying inspired and motivated?
An open mind and exploring the world that surrounds us, that itself is more than enough to provide inspiration. If you also threw into the mix exploring the work of other people, not only photographers but all creatives around the world, then I would say the question should rather be: how can you not be inspired?
Also, I could refer here in part to the previous question. You remain inspired by staying up to date with technology and the creative solutions that it has to offer, which is also inspiring and motivating for us as well.
What’s the work achievement you’re most proud of?
It's probably not going to be a popular answer and it might sound cliché, but here it is.
Really! What better achievement can there be than returning clients who are happy with the results that our work produced for them?
How do you recharge away from the office?
Running a business unfortunately doesn’t leave much spare time, but whenever possible I try to spend time outside, enjoying nature. Meditation and being curious about life, in general, are also a tonic.
What advice would you give to other aspiring creatives looking for work?
Never give up and stay patient, learn as much as you can about marketing, business and networking.
What’s your one big hope for the future of the creative industries?
What I'm going to say is not just for creative industries, although they could also benefit. I hope that one day we all will see the world as one, that it is the only home we have and to share it together. I hope we will stop dividing ourselves in a million different ways and will start to collaborate and work together on equal terms.
If you could change one thing about the industry, what would it be?
People's' appreciation that the creative process is something more than just clicking a button and realising it takes time to create something of high quality, not to mention all the knowledge, experience and equipment we have and use.
