Behind the scenes with jelly's newest directors Mr Kaplin

Published by

We're very excited to introduce the amazingly talented Mr Kaplin  to jelly's red hot directors roster. We talk inspiration, dream clients, and why animation is such a powerful storytelling tool...

Mr Kaplin specialises in 3D design and animation. Their colourful and abstract work, explores experimental approaches to design, animation and story telling. We went behind the scenes with Robert Glassford & Daniel Zucco to find out more about their inspiration, dream clients, and why animation is such a powerful storytelling tool.

1.       Tell us how it all started.

Dan - Mr Kaplin was born over Skype. We were separated by 10,000 km and a time difference of 8 hours, but Rob and I worked together on Skype for almost two years before moving to London to set up the studio. We now sit next to each other, but still use Skype to chat.

2.       What’s a typical day like for you? How do you come up with all your new concepts?

Rob - There is no such thing as a typical day for us, as every project has a new set of challenges. When we get a brief in we will always try and spend some time on our own before throwing ideas past one another. Once we have a few ideas we like we will talk them out and what ever is left at the end of that conversion is usually the direction we will head in.

3.       What do you love most about your job?

Dan - That everyday presents a new creative challenge and getting to collaborate with so many talented people.

4.       What is the most challenging part?

Rob - For us, it's separating our work lives from our personally lives. As well as working together we are also best friends and we love the work we do, so sometimes it can be difficult switching off.

5.       You’ve got an impressive portfolio, tell us a little about what it was like to work for such super clients.

Dan - Cheers, we have been very fortunate to work with some really great clients who have allowed to explore ideas and grow as a studio through their work.

6.       We know picking a favourite piece is like picking a favourite child, so how are your projects special to you in their own way?

Dan - We love that looking at each piece we have worked on, we can see a where we have learnt a new skill or creative approach. It's like looking at a timeline of our collective minds.

7.       What do you think will be the next big thing in animation?

Dan - I think as software and hardware is becoming so much more accessible, we are seeing more artists from different creative disciplines getting involved in animation. So I think we will see a lot work with handcrafted techniques mixed with CG.

8.       What does animation do that other mediums can’t?

Rob - Animation is similar to writing, thats why I was drawn to it (no pun intended). All you need is a pencil and a piece of paper, any story you want to tell you can tell it. Unlike film making where you need an army of people to help you, you can achieve anything you want and you can do it alone.

9. What would be your perfect brief or dream client?

Dan - a perfect brief would be an open brief… for Nike!

10. What’s your favourite snack whilst working?

Dan - Pizza and Beer, that's a snack yeah?

11. What’s your favourite music to work to?

Dan - I can't stop listening to Pantha Du Prince.

12. What’s your favourite decade and why?

Rob - We recently went to the Off festival in Barcelona where there were a whole bunch of incredible creative speakers. One of those speakers was Signal noise (James White), he left a huge impact on us… very funny speaker, beautifully articulate and a massive fan of everything 1980s. Since then I think we now look at the 80's in a whole new light.

13. Describe yourself in 3 words.

Rob - Open, imaginative and fuzzy

14. Tell us something about yourself that we didn’t already know.

Dan - The name Mr Kaplin, was inspired a character from Hitchcock's North by North West.

What do you think the next big thing in animation will be? Where do you find your inspiration? Tell us what you want to hear in the next Behind The Scenes interview.
