Mentor Sessions: Toby Snowdon

The Creative Mentor Network (CMN) is a London-based charity working to make the creative industries more diverse and inclusive through mentoring.

The programme sees a host of talent from some of world’s top agencies link up with young mentees to advise and guide them on their future careers. It also offers a first-hand feel for agency life and introduces them to all the different disciplines that exist within the creative environment.

Very Interesting and love the approach. I my self have been mentoring a graphic design junior hoping to get into the. industry and its really motivating from both sides as I can pass on knowledge and experience whilst being inspired by the enthusiasm and creativity a new generation brings.

Mentoring is an excellent way to become industry ready as I have supported on a Graphics degree course and they do an excellent job in the technical and creative but there is that real life experience missing from the day to day lectures and tutorials. somewhere there needs to be a balance.

This makes a beautiful and assuring read especially on the part of those with ability but lack opportunities. Thanks to Toby and his friends for a well thought out scheme to help the underprivileged. Would it be too much to start considering over 50s that want to return to design and advertising and still feel they are competitive. As an example, I came in 2006 and had a degree in Digital media but with a background in graphic design. Unfortunately, I got carried away with the ‘message’ that Coreldraw and PageMaker were none starters, so I moved away from an attempt at sourcing for design jobs, but did lots of freelance works. Over time, having worked as a supply teacher, I realised how wrong I have been. I am still interested in returning to core graphics design, no thanks to the recent up in retirement age. I am still creatively productive and a strong illustrator...I feel I still have something to offer but opportunities could be far fetched.
