Funding for creative talent at UAL

Published by

University of the Arts London is the leading specialist creative university with an extensive range of courses in art, design, fashion, communication and performing arts. UAL draws together six Colleges each with its own world-class reputation: Camberwell College of Arts, Central Saint Martins, Chelsea College of Arts, London College of Communication, London College of Fashion, and Wimbledon College of Arts.

To help make study easier to finance, UAL offers a range of scholarships, bursaries and awards generously donated by individuals, companies, philanthropic charities and the University. Hundreds of students each year are realising their creative potential at UAL thanks to funding.

Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards

Applications are now open for a range of funding opportunities, including the UAL Vice-Chancellor’s Postgraduate Scholarships, which will waive 50% of the Home/EU tuition fee on qualifying UAL masters courses starting in the 2016/2017 academic year. The programme will also grant ten international awards of £25,000 to help pay the tuition fees and costs associated with moving to and studying in the UK.

Before commencing his MFA Fine Art at Wimbledon College of Arts, Tim Alexander was a registered nurse working in A&E. Determined to be a professional artist, Tim applied for the UAL Vice-Chancellor’s Postgraduate Scholarship, to save 50% on his tuition fees.

Tim says: “If I hadn’t received the scholarship I wouldn’t have applied to my masters course as I didn’t have the funds. It has made the course affordable, particularly as a mature postgraduate student where there’s limited access to funding.”

For Tim the scholarship has meant he can pursue his creative ambitions. “This time two years ago I would never have considered applying for a postgraduate course. But now I have and I’ve proved to myself I can do it. It has made me more confident and positive about the future.”

Tim enjoys the friendly atmosphere of Wimbledon College of Arts along with the facilities. “The tutors and technicians for my course are fantastic. They are helpful and a great source of information. I also have great classmates who have a variety of experiences and backgrounds.”

MA Fine Art, Chelsea College of Arts student Rhiannon gained a massive confidence boost when she was awarded The John Hoyland Scholarship. Rhiannon explains: “It’s hard to be a successful artist, especially when you’re an emerging student and you’re at the beginning of your career; being awarded a scholarship is like someone telling you that they believe in you and your art, which helps significantly.”

The John Hoyland Scholarship was established by the John Hoyland Trust in memory of artist and former UAL staff member John Hoyland. “This scholarship has given me the opportunity to pursue my masters degree and has allowed me to focus solely on my artistic practice, without being financially crippled,” Rhiannon says.
