ABOUT
THE BRIEF
Dorset Wildlife Trust, in partnership with the National Trust, secured Lottery funding to create a state-of-the-art ‘Lookout’ building on Brownsea Island. While the architectural design was complete, it was the brief to Mad River to bring the space to life, crafting a compelling visitor experience and developing engaging interpretation to connect people with the island’s unique habitat and inspire a deeper appreciation of the natural world.
THE SOLUTION
Before we could begin educating others, we first needed to immerse ourselves in the island’s rich habitats. Through multiple visits to Brownsea Island and the new Lookout, we gained a deep understanding of its unique ecosystems. Despite its modest size, Brownsea is one of the most biodiverse sites in England, home to over 4,900 recorded species, spanning plants, insects, birds, and mammals.
Our challenge was to translate this incredible natural richness into an engaging and accessible visitor experience, while carefully managing the flow of foot traffic through the space. To do this, we developed a suite of interpretation that loosely divided the space into four key zones, each offering a distinct encounter with the island’s story.
Visitors are first introduced to a layered landscape installation showcasing the island’s variety of habitats. Each layer features beautifully illustrated wildlife and thoughtful copy explaining their role within the broader ecosystem, helping visitors appreciate the delicate balance of life on the island.
As guests journey further, they encounter an abstracted reed bed, a striking, sculptural feature made from profile-cut, eco-friendly materials. This installation brings to life the seasonal journeys of rare bird visitors, exploring themes of migration and breeding through a tactile, visually arresting experience.
Some of the island’s most iconic species, such as the red squirrel and avocet are celebrated through bold, large-format photography and vibrant graphics. These focal points give visitors a chance to pause and connect with the island’s conservation success stories on a more personal level.
At the heart of the space is the viewing podium, where interpretation takes a lighter touch. Designed to frame and enhance the stunning panoramic view, this area features minimal but meaningful information about the birds and animals visible from this vantage point. A darker colour palette on secondary walls ensures the vista remains the hero.
A flock of hand-formed birds, suspended from the ceiling, creates a sense of movement and acts as intuitive wayfinding, subtly guiding visitors through the space.
As guests leave the Lookout, they’re met with a 3D illuminated map of the island. This final feature highlights key wildlife hotspots and estimated walking times, helping visitors plan the rest of their adventure while reinforcing their connection to the landscapes they’ve just explored.
Since its official public opening, the finished space has received an overwhelmingly positive response and is now welcoming over 3,000 visitors a week, offering a lasting, meaningful connection to one of England’s most treasured natural environments.
