ABOUT

Concept:
Ordinary Beauty: The Photography of Edwin Smith was an exhibition displaying over 100 extraordinary black and white photographs from the RIBA Library. From urban scenes documenting British social history to evocative landscape images and atmospheric interiors, the images displayed reveal the genius and breadth of his work. Alongside his images of Britain the exhibition showed also photographs taken on his travels to Europe as well as his published books and photographic equipment and featured specially filmed contributions ranging from Alan Bennett to broadcaster Gillian Darley offer personal perspectives of Smith’s work. Project was delivered 5 months.
Execution:
I briefed 2d and 3d design team and developed quality assurance, design review process that would take project from concept design through a rapid approvals process to detailed design in just 3 months. A process made more difficult by the fact that curators had not yet finalised object lists or exhibition narrative so whole process had to be collapsed; with design and curators working on elements simultaneously; through a series of focused conversations then nice gentle undulating listen. With the pace more staccato and disjointed it was critical that I kept lines of communication and focused enough that I had enough information to engage fabricators.
Result
Exhibition was delivered on time and to budget and received universally positive reviews.
