ABOUT

About
Guča is more than a music festival. It is one of the strongest contemporary symbols of Balkan identity — loud, contradictory, emotional and deeply rooted in local culture.
Being half Serbian myself, I approached the project as a research into how this atmosphere could be translated into a contemporary visual language without turning Balkan culture into a stereotype or folklore decoration.
The goal was not to modernise the festival, but to reveal its existing character through a flexible identity system capable of embracing spontaneity, imperfection and collective celebration.
Main principles:
• Authenticity over polish
The identity deliberately avoids corporate perfection in favour of human expression and improvisation
• Controlled visual chaos
Dense typography, broken alignment and changing compositions reflect the rhythm and unpredictability of brass performances
• Collective participation
Visual elements are designed to feel open, accessible and easily appropriated by the festival community
• Contemporary Balkan
Instead of relying on folk ornaments, the project references everyday Balkan visual culture, street typography and local graphic vernacular

Execution
The project began with visual research into Balkan vernacular graphics, amateur typography, local signage, archival photographs and festival documentation. Instead of reproducing historical aesthetics, these references were abstracted into a contemporary visual system adaptable across print, digital media and environmental graphics.
The logo was developed as a generative calligraphic system rather than a fixed symbol. Multiple handwritten forms allow the identity to behave like live music — expressive, variable and imperfect while remaining recognisable.
Visual language:
• Custom calligraphy
Handwritten forms introduce rhythm and human ardour
• Typography
Dense uppercase typography and intentionally unstable layouts reproduce the visual intensity of festival streets
• Colour
Bright saturated colours borrow directly from Balkan everyday life instead of conventional festival palettes
• Photography
Portraits focus on real participants rather than performers, reinforcing the community-driven nature of the festival

Result
Rather than creating a polished festival identity, the project explores how visual systems can preserve cultural complexity instead of simplifying it.
The result is an identity that remains flexible, expressive and deeply connected to the atmosphere of Guča itself.
