ABOUT
Extinction, Explosion is a virtual experience that visualizes the Earth after human extinction.
As scientific reports illustrate an ever-clear picture of environmental change and species extinction, we are prone to depressing thoughts of ourselves as the last to witness all that's beautiful on Earth. Yet, geological records revealed that biodiversity had rebounded after mass extinction events. How do we contemplate our role in this stream of life?
Extinction, Explosion is my attempt to make a leap out of climate anxiety. For an indefinite time, the sea level rises so much to immerse some of our major cities in water. Under the sea, the human architecture became the skeleton for marine creatures to grow on, not unlike coral reefs. What used to be a museum collection of people's pasts become a lively space for newly evolved species to occupy. The changing Earth can inspire curiosity, wonder, imagination, and hope. As an artist, my role is to uncover these emotions.
Extinction, Explosion is not a piece to put the curtain down for human existence on Earth. Rather, I wonder if we could imagine alternative ways of designing our environment knowing anything we built will be used in some way by other creatures in time? How do we coexist with water, and what do we leave behind?
