ABOUT
Each year for two months, tens of thousands of Blue-lined Seabream (aka Sailfin Snapper) arrive on the reefs of Peleliu island in Palau. Where they come from no-one really knows as we hardly see them for the rest of the year. They are here for one purpose, to spawn. This number of fish attracts a huge number of predators and in the strong currents that threaten to push everything down into the depths, they swim for their lives.
This is a collection of shots filmed during one dive on the 6th April this year. It shows the incredible spawning activity of 20,000+ fish. This amazing natural spectacle has hardly ever been filmed before as it occurs down at 35+m in extremely strong current. The fish are scared of bubbles so using a rebreather is the only option.
Huge numbers of Oceanic Black-tip Sharks are hunting amongst this aggregation making for an experience of sensory overload and surprises. The scale of effort here is mind blowing. This is the dive I have been training for for the last 2 years.
