ABOUT

After researching signage along the Leeds Liverpool canal, it was clear to me that it is made up of a multitude of voices, rural, urban, old, new, official and unofficial. I wanted to add to these voices in a way that can be interpreted amongst the boating communities, as after researching about todays boaters, it seems they sometimes don’t feel they have a clear voice along the canal. For this reason I have invented a code for the boaters to use and communicate amongst themselves in a subtle way.
The code has been designed by using 4 aspects. One being the traditional rose and castle designs present on boats and along the canal. Two being the basic layout of a narrow boat itself. Three would be the mandatory safety signs found along the canal. And finally four, I have taken inspiration from the Hobo code to make this some what secret, its exclusively for people who are in the know.
These stencils would be used on the toepath by boats or areas that the stencils are required.
