ABOUT

This is a bespoke glass wall piece influenced by bacteria consisting of 4 panels of bullsye glass backlit by LED lights and 3 pieces of float glass with transfers applied and fired in the kiln. My research into colour, shape and the behaviour of bacteria has enabled me to translate these visual characteristics into producing my final piece. I have designed my glass panels with a commercial setting in mind such as hospitals, university and museums within the science sector.

Using a high firing procedure with 4 layers of bullseye glass and after extensive research and experimentation of sampling placement of colour and bubble powder, I was able to recreate a visual effect of bacteria within the glass.

Having the panels’ backlit with LED lighting enables the glass to highlight and illuminate the depth of colour and detail.

In my brief I explained that I wanted to produce something beautiful that contradicts the whole stigma about bacteria.

While visiting the science laboratory at Clifton campus and meeting with the microbiologist, I had the opportunity to grow my own bacteria; this gave me insight into growing cultures and seeing the growth of bacteria at first hand.

The process of completing the piece was very complex and time consuming but having developed the theme of bacteria over the past 2 years, I am very happy with the outcome of this final piece.
