ABOUT

Concept
Grief is a cinematic vignette rooted in personal experience, exploring the emotional aftermath of sudden loss. The story was inspired by the passing of my uncle and the devastating effect it had on my grandmother, who had already endured the loss of her husband. This project set out to portray the quiet isolation and emotional endurance that often follow grief, using film as a medium to communicate a universal experience through a deeply intimate lens.

Set in the rural landscapes of County Monaghan, Ireland, the film also draws on cultural and geographic identity. The sparse beauty of the Irish countryside mirrors the emotional depth of the story, tying personal sorrow to a broader sense of place and tradition.

Execution
I produced and edited the entire film independently, from concept development to post-production. The visual language was intentionally minimal, relying on a blend of lingering close-ups and wide, atmospheric shots to reflect both internal emotion and the surrounding environment. This slow, observational style allowed for silence and stillness to play a central role in the storytelling.

Location was crucial, the quiet, open spaces of rural Monaghan became a metaphor for grief itself: expansive, isolating, yet beautiful. Every shot was composed to draw out emotion through subtlety rather than dialogue, making the film feel intimate and immersive.

Sound design was kept minimal and naturalistic to heighten the emotional realism and allow the audience to focus on the subtle cues of memory and presence.

Grief was awarded the Greer Garson Film Award at Ulster University, receiving praise for both its technical craft and emotional impact. The award included a cash prize and marked the film as a standout student project. Beyond academic recognition, the project served as a meaningful tribute to my family, allowing me to process grief creatively while resonating with others who have experienced similar loss.
