Stepping Out of the Shadows is a fashion editorial exploring the relationship between form, light and presence.

Created in collaboration with model Thea Thorpe, the series takes inspiration from the bold visual language of classic fashion photography while introducing a more contemporary, graphic approach. Across a sequence of colour and black-and-white images, harsh directional lighting was used deliberately, replacing softness with strong highlights, deep blacks and sharply defined shadows.

At six foot two, Thea’s extraordinary height and long, slender proportions became an integral part of the concept. Rather than simply posing within the frame, her body was used to create shape, line and structure. Extended limbs, angular gestures and elongated silhouettes interact with the light, allowing both Thea and the shadows she creates to become part of the composition.

Throughout the series, those shadows take on an almost physical presence. In some frames, Thea appears contained within them; in others, she seems to emerge directly from the darkness.

The resulting photographs sit somewhere between fashion portraiture and graphic abstraction — a study of confidence, movement and transformation, where the model does not simply occupy the light but appears to step deliberately out of the shadows.
