Kwan Chow Motion Graphics Designer

ABOUT

For our graduate show in CSM, Oliver Vanes and I used three posters as a representation of the traditional media output of design, and set about translating them into four-dimensional experiences.

Film, gaming, porn, art amongst others have or will all make the straightforward transition to virtual reality but what about graphic design? Imagine a future in which you are in a Facebook VR hangout with friends. This virtual space, like all on Facebook and the web will be advertised. Traditionally for example, this may take the form of a web poster for an upcoming exhibition appearing to the side of your browser. Instead, you now inhabit an immersive three-dimensional space, one that requires a virtual reality advertisement. This is an example of graphic design in VR. You are transported from your 3D, avatar based social gathering into a world designed to sell an event or product. A VR poster.

This project is an envisaging and exploration of graphic design transcending its traditional media. The clear majority of VR worlds are versions or interpretations of reality. Whether realistic or gamified, they all maintain the traditional form of reality, floor, room, landscape, horizon, world etc. By taking a format so typical of graphic design and transitioning it into a medium with infinite possibilities and outcomes, the result is an abstract experience, an interpretation not before possible, one completely removed from reality. This experiment explores whether a poster as a symbol of graphic design, a traditionally two-dimensional format, can be translated into VR. Whether the rules of design have any position or worthy consideration within the virtual space.

At this point, questions of the future arise. If graphic design can be translated into virtual reality, if a poster can transcend into a four-dimensional experience, do we then reach a moment in which designing a poster must be done with respect to its potential VR extrapolation? As posters were once designed with consideration for their viewing on the web, to the mobile and so on, must we now ready for a time in which the poster can exist and transform into virtual reality?
