One Call is based on the true story of Maisha Sumah, who at just 18 years old survived a near-fatal attack by her abusive boyfriend—also a teenager. Her life was saved by a neighbour who, upon hearing distress, made the decision to call the police. That single act of intervention is at the heart of the film.

Written by myself, directed by Williams Katuna, and produced by Maisha Sumah, the film brings urgent attention to the role of bystanders in moments of crisis—particularly within the wider context of violence against women and girls (VAWG).

This story speaks to several critical and interconnected issues:

The lack of education around emotional intelligence, healthy relationships, boundaries, and self-worth among young people
The impact of learned behaviours and generational trauma
The early onset of abusive dynamics within teenage relationships
The normalisation of bystander inaction—“it’s not my business”—even in moments of clear danger
The adultification and vulnerability of young girls, particularly Black girls

Maisha’s experience sits at the intersection of youth and adult experiences of domestic abuse, offering a powerful lens through which to examine how these patterns begin, evolve, and can be interrupted.

Today, Maisha is a TEDx speaker, public speaker, and the 2025 Daily Mail Inspirational Women Award winner. She works across communities and schools, delivering sessions on emotional intelligence, toxic masculinity, and self-worth—equipping young people with the tools to break harmful cycles.
