ABOUT

The Vernacular Ringing Mosque - Pt. 1

After months of ideation, design and development, my final major project came to fruition. With a #biomimetic #design #ethos, "The Vernacular Ringing Mosque" was an ode to #Science, #Art & #Culture.

From an #architectural point of view, The building showcases low-tech innovations to produce sustainably viable options for the harvesting of drinking and agricultural water supply from the #natural #environment; with an aim to desalinate the local farmlands and encourage reforestation.

The #structure provides a means of recycling in rural Pakistan for tyres and cardboard: it also provides the inhabitants with a new alternative to concrete - #hempcrete. Hemp grows in the region and proves to have many benefits over #concrete including a reduction to overall weight and maintains a negative #carbon footprint.

Boasting a large #Solar concentration mirror and solar panel array, the building is expected to power up to three villages and itself sufficiently. The composition of the walls also allows for a much needed sanctuary from the summer heat of Pakistan which can reach up to 47c.

Interior - pt. 2

The #interior looks at #innovating the current perception of #acoustics, with a composition of Structural Trusses which act as dampeners, #Ceramic wings which act as diffusers and amplifiers followed by the use of #harmonic tuning forks to capture resonance and convert it into pure tone - Hence the name "Vernacular Ringing mosque". This would allow for the melodic notes of a reciter to be harmonised with the building.

The actual model was hand made at a scale of 1:100 using #jesmonite #resin and #fibreglass, followed by months of rigorous hand sanding. This project broadened my insights to the ceramic world and the infinite possibilities that can arise from such a versatile #material group.
