ABOUT
Concept
I was engaged to choose some lighting for this renovation, where two apartments were being joined together and remodelled. My client wanted a backlit stone counter in his bathroom, and we visited the stone workshop to choose a piece of stone and test some lighting fixtures with it. He had also mentioned that he would like a special lamp in the new entryway, which was the space bringing together the two apartments.
In order to test lighting fixtures with the stone, we visited the stone workshop together. When I saw how much stone would be leftover from the slab after cutting the counters, I immediately thought of the entry. I saw that we could make an elegant stone lamp which would fit perfectly with the pared back aesthetic he was looking for.
Execution
I started by testing out my concept with some lighting assemblies. I then created a physical mockup in cardboard and shared it with the client. Once he was happy with the design, I created drawings for the stonemason so he could cut and glue the slab. I then mounted the lighting assembly in the stone, and the lamp was complete.
Results
The client and his family were really pleased with the lamp. It’s beautifully simple and glows softly day and night, providing a central point of entry and connection for the entire apartment.
