ABOUT
I have collected Halo art books since Rare contributed to Halo 3, and I later worked on Halo 5 myself. By the time Halo Infinite came along, I was already steeped in the series’ visual language and lore, making it a perfect project for me.
For Halo Infinite, I was asked to create environmental graphics that supported the game world. The goal was to introduce believable detail that made its spaces feel tangible, functional and lived in.
Some of this artwork was created for one of the first multiplayer maps featured in the beta: Live Fire, set within the Spartan Academy training grounds. The brief was to make it feel unmistakably Halo—grounded in our reality, but clearly some way into the future.
Scale and placement were particularly important. Some designs span entire buildings, while others appear as smaller, more subtle pieces of branding. I focused on clean, bold forms supported by tightly controlled detail that would hold up during gameplay.
I also worked with the environment team to design graphics for physical buttons and interface screens. Small details such as functional labelling help the world feel futuristic while remaining familiar and believable.
The work is similar to the FUI design I have created for film, except players can walk right up to and inspect every detail in first person when they take a break from murdering Grunts. For this type of work, I avoid following current design trends and instead draw inspiration from older references, particularly films and analogue product design.
I also created a selection of world-building decals. Halo exists within a science-fiction fantasy universe, but its environments still need the visual density of real places. Each sheet explored a particular theme and gave the environment artists a practical kit of parts to work with. The layouts intentionally referenced the transfer sheets found inside traditional model kits.
I was travelling frequently at the time and found strong visual references in airports around the world. Functional typography, safety markings, maintenance labels and wayfinding systems all fed into the work.
Thanks to the teams at 343 Industries and Microsoft. I am proud to have contributed to the project and interested to see where they take the Halo universe next.
