Jonny Severn Design Strategy - Expert Designer & Animator

ABOUT

I worked with 343 Industries on Halo 5: Guardians, creating a wide range of UI and environmental graphics for the game. My contribution included branding, iconography, screen UI, decals, rendered animation assets, alien computer interfaces, cinematic graphics and online player emblems.

An important part of the role was working within Halo’s established art direction and detailed visual bible. Each faction already had its own recognisable design language, so everything I created needed to feel authentic to the Halo universe. The challenge was to respect those rules while building on them, introducing new ideas that suited Halo 5 without losing continuity with the earlier games.

The work shown here includes early FUI concepts for alien computer terminals. I experimented with unusual shapes, forms and layouts while deliberately avoiding anything that felt overtly human. The final in-game interfaces were more stripped back, but remained close to these initial ideas.

I also created in-world graphics across the game, including branding for the Liang-Dortmund Corporation, graphics for the Fathom underwater research station, shop identities, posters and corridor signage. My work appears throughout many of the levels, adding the background detail that helps each location feel distinct.

Halo 5 was a fantastic project to work on, and I always enjoyed collaborating with the team at 343 Industries, now Halo Studios
