ABOUT

The Great Drone Who Came Home

The Great Drone Who Came Home is a whimsical picture book for children aged 3–5, inspired by the real-world phenomenon of drones behaving unpredictably when their batteries run low.

The story follows Bumble, a cheerful little yellow drone who hears the dreaded BEEP! of a low battery and tries to fly home to his boy, Sam. But instead of obeying his controls, Bumble is mysteriously pulled across the countryside. Soon he discovers he isn’t the only one — drones of every shape and colour are all travelling in exactly the same direction.

Their journey leads them to a hidden valley, where something extraordinary happens. Hundreds of little drones begin clicking, clacking and joining together until they become Humbletron — an enormous, blinking, slightly clumsy flying machine capable of doing something none of them could manage alone.

Despite his enormous size, Humbletron has no interest in conquering the world, fighting monsters or even becoming mayor. He has a much more important job:

getting every little drone home.

Visually, the book combines loose watercolour and ink storybook illustration with a warm retro-mechanical aesthetic. Bumble and the other drones were designed to feel like lovable little mechanical creatures rather than conventional modern quadcopters, while Humbletron is constructed visibly from hundreds of individual drones, giving the transformation a playful sense of scale and discovery.

Beneath the humour and adventure is a simple idea about belonging, cooperation and finding help when you cannot make the journey alone.

A story about getting lost, becoming part of something bigger — and discovering that sometimes the strangest journey away from home can be the one that leads you back.
