ABOUT
Saul Cathcart is a contemporary, landscape artist living and working in Cornwall. He paints exclusively in situ, often on rugged coastlines so he can respond to his surroundings directly. As a result, his work has great observational skill and a unique energy.
He has regular shows in Cornwall, Devon and abroad.
Saul approached All Saints to produce a book and other printed materials for his 2010 exhibition ‘7 Bays’ at The Rock Institute in Cornwall.
The first task was to photograph every painting chosen for the show; 60 in total. The challenge was to capture the energy of the paintings on screen and ultimately for print. Saul collaborated with us in editing the photos, taking care to preserve the integrity of each image in terms of colour, light and ambience, staying close to his original vision.
Next came the image selection and pagination. We decided that each bay should have its own section and Ordinance Survey reference to gently underline the bay’s places on the map, but to also add a personal touch to each chapter. The initial print run of 500 books were printed in two different covers to convey more interest; with an eye towards placement in the exhibition and bookshops.
In order to promote the exhibition and book, we organised press pieces in the Guardian’s weekend exhibition pages as well as local newspapers in Devon and Cornwall. And finally, we carried the design across business cards, posters and flyers.
