ABOUT

Drench is a high-concept, slow-motion video project conceived as a fictional advertisement for Laneige’s Water Bank skincare range. As the director, I led the creative development from concept to completion—storyboarding the visual narrative, assembling a talented team, and guiding the shoot with a meticulous eye drawn from my background in still life photography.

The film is a celebration of hydration, using the movement of water—splashing, pouring, raining, and rippling—as a metaphor for the product’s moisturising power. Inspired by the viscosity and behavior of water itself, we sought to elevate simple visuals into poetic, slow-motion expressions of elegance and energy.

To bring this to life, we employed special effects that pushed the limits of a studio shoot. Sound waves created by a large subwoofer were used to manipulate water in a tank, causing rhythmic ripples and levitating droplets. A custom-built tube system created bubbles and underwater dynamics, enhancing the surreal quality of the piece. Despite modest resources, our Director of Photography, Johno Verity, captured the footage using a Freefly Ember—delivering cinematic slow motion without a six-figure camera budget.

One of the biggest post-production challenges came from maintaining a pristine aesthetic; despite using fresh bottled water, some of our best takes were marred by dust and splash marks. I manually edited hundreds of frames to ensure a flawless, polished result.

What sets Drench apart is its experimental spirit and team-driven nature. Created collaboratively by a group of passionate creatives who contributed their time, equipment, and studio space, this project is not just a visual homage to water—it’s a testament to what can be achieved with imagination, technical craft, and shared vision.
