ABOUT
A recent project has been modelling and texturing this low poly telephone in 3dsMAX and Substance Painter. I only had a rudimentary knowledge of both programs, so it's been a nice opportunity to test out techniques and learn a bit more in depth.
There are a few things I'd do differently if I made it again (like keeping the keypad buttons as geometry instead of hoping the normal map would do enough), but I'm pretty pleased with it. Of course like all Substance noobs I used every filter and smart material available, so maybe it's a bit overdone. I've seen plenty of public phone boxes in a worse state though!
I have to say, adding all the coin scratches, finger prints and torn off stickers was really fun. It's great thinking about the storytelling element of texturing, figuring out what would get dirty or damaged and why. Really gives the object a sense of having a life before we're seeing it.
- Based on the BT phone booths in the 1990s.
- The Kurupt FM logo belongs to the BBC.
