ABOUT
Within this University Project, I was given one week to produce an A4 publication responding to our ongoing Critical Analysis Essay and was restricted to methods of collage, printing techniques and colour palettes. On this page, I have featured some of my favourite spreads from the 16 page publication which I produced within the week.
This project pushed me to convey the topic of ‘Representation within Picture Books when aiming to promote Inclusivity’ and become more playful with form and concept when dictating layout. Due to the tight turnaround, quick decision making was required that strongly impacted the compositions and stylistic choice for simplicity. I thoroughly enjoyed creating the characters that guide a reader through my publication, and was able to utilise many of the concepts presented within my critical analysis essay to reflect the key themes.
Within my essay and publication, I draw upon the content of successful, representative picture books when aiming to promote inclusive behaviours. I additionally discuss many of the start-up projects aimed at underrepresented Ethnic minority creators and their role when pushing for accurate, representative voices and stories to be heard.
This project enabled me to bring to light many of the shocking statistics highlighted within the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education’s yearly review of the content within children’s picture books. With only 7% of children’s books containing a central Ethnic minority character, the need to push for better representation within the children’s publishing realm can’t be understated. As I am so passionate about the under discussed topic, this week long project allowed me the opportunity to do so and I thoroughly enjoyed being able to highlight the topic to a wider audience.
