Heat and the Disabled

• The heat is downright dangerous for the disabled.

• No air conditioning, loss of power, or being trapped outside, all pose life threatening scenarios for the disabled.

Hurricanes and the Disabled

• Hurricanes kill via downed trees, fires, flying debris and flooding.

• They leave behind mold, mosquitoes, and contaminated water.

• Disabled folks must try to avoid all of this by trying to get to shelters and staying inside.

• My observation is that the disabled folks with families and/or caregivers fare the best.

Health and the Disabled

• Maintaining some semblance of health while being disabled is swimming upstream in most Healthcare settings.

The Lost Soul

• He's a lost soul that the world will forget,

• a fool on the wrong side of town.

• With the wind at his back and the sun in his eyes,

• he can't find his next breath.

• With scorn they say he did it to himself,

• and only the fittest will survive.

• As his eyelids drop shut and his chest doesn't rise,

• He floats to his final demise.

• He had no family or folks that cared,

• but he deserved more than this.

• His life was a story that will never be retold,

• do we even ask why?

The Old Pine

• She was knitting in her rocker when she heard the loud crash.

• That was the last thing she heard.

• The old pine had decided to drop in on her,

• the trailer didn't stand a chance.

• When they cleared the debris she was not found.

• Her story was bulldozed away.

The Power Outage

• He could not last long without oxygen to his nose.

• The power had been out for hours.

• The more he struggled to find his phone his turned a bluish shade.

• His breath was more shallow now as he drooped forward in his chair.

• By the time the power came back on, he had gone to a better place.

A Call to Action

• Does it have to be this way?

• Does the answer have to be "blowin in the wind?"

• Can't we stop the damn wars and look up for a second? Or do we just keep piling up bodies and guilt till there's nothing meaningful left.
