Why you should join us ...

Do you have a passion for pictures and think you could capture the images at the heart of a news story? Do you want to be part of telling people's stories that currently aren’t being told on TV? We need someone with an abundance of brilliant creative ideas who understands what is important to the people of the Midlands and gets them talking.

The ITV Central region is vastly diverse and we're increasing our efforts to be more inclusive and reflective of the people we serve and is why we're on the search for a Trainee Camera Operator who will bring something different to our team.

Whether covering breaking news or uncovering stories in underrepresented communities, we're looking for someone who can help bring these stories to the mainstream and to have them showcased in our programmes and online platforms.

An ability to stay calm under pressure, our Camera Operators provide first class camera and newsgathering skills, working with some of the best journalists in the business to deliver high quality and trusted news.

You will have the opportunity to develop skills in all aspects of location newsgathering, both live and recorded. With training and guidance, you will develop your skills to shoot, collate, edit and send high quality footage, operate the satellite news gathering truck and LiveU.

This is not an onscreen, or studio-based, role but one that is on-the-road, fast-moving, involving filming at different locations across the Midlands on a daily basis, working with reporters or on your own to tight deadlines. It's a busy news patch where no two days are the same.

Key Responsibilities:

What do I need to get this role/job?

Minimum criteria:

  • A good level of physical fitness is required due to the weight of the equipment needed in this role
  • Full UK driving license
  • Operational camera experience - within studies, work placement or other

ITV strongly encourages applications for this role from candidates with a disability and as a Disability Confident Leader, we have committed to interview all candidates with a disability whose application meets the minimum criteria for the role. (minimum criteria above)

Key Criteria:

  • The ability to work effectively in a team
  • The ability to communicate effectively
  • Knowledge of news patch (Desirable)
  • A passion for live TV news production, particularly in a creative and operational capacity
  • An excellent communicator who is quick thinking and calm under pressure
  • Highly motivated individual as well as friendly, flexible and approachable

Your rostered hours will include some evening and weekend working and you can expect to travel to locations across our region on a daily basis. Because of the nature of news production, you will be required to work outdoors for long periods. There will also be occasions when you are required to work long and unsociable hours at short notice.

**The successful candidate will be asked to identify any pre-existing medical conditions that may be exacerbated by carrying a reasonably heavy camera and kit.**

Please write a letter of application explaining your camera experience and why you want to work for ITV News Central and what you will bring to our team.

Provide a link to a showreel showing a range of examples of your camera work.

We're happy to discuss any support/personalisation you may need during our application process as part of our reasonable adjustments approach. So we encourage you to get in touch with us if you require anything...

We want to be the most flexible employer in Media. We offer Smart working and  we will support you and provide you the right environment and work/ life balance.

We reach millions of people everyday, that’s why having diverse talents and being an organisation where colleagues feel included is crucial to us. We have various networks who celebrate and support our colleagues. We try to embed an inclusive mindset in everything we do.
