Job Description:

We are hiring a staff editor to produce the home screens and push notifications from the London newsroom.

Candidates should be able to carry out changes to the layout and order of the home screens quickly and cleanly, while showing creativity and initiative in presentation and language. They should have a knack for writing accurate, concise push notifications, sometimes under a tight deadline.

Home screen producers must work well under pressure, set priorities among many tasks and keep up with the demands of multiple editors. We expect candidates to possess broad, deep interest in the news and to feel comfortable assessing matters of language, accuracy and fairness in stories. They should have some sensitivity to design and user experience and exhibit technical aptitude. We want quick, adaptable learners who can pick up new tools and change habits.

Responsibilities include:
- Mastering the production systems and workflows for our desktop and mobile home screens.
- Producing the live home screen in a group setting under the direction of news editors.
- Writing lively, precise summaries, headlines and captions, consistent with Times style.
- Handling fast-moving breaking-news presentations.
- Applying sound judgment to the news.
- Writing and fact-checking push notifications, and sending them using a variety of tools.
- Using data and tools to try to improve presentations and increase reader engagement.
- Communicating professionally with colleagues from across many departments and newsrooms.

Candidates must already be authorized to work in the U.K. The schedule will include a weekend shift.

The New York Times is committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce, one that reflects the varied global community we serve. Our journalism and the products we build in the service of that journalism greatly benefit from a range of perspectives, which can only come from diversity of all types, across our ranks, at all levels of the organization. Achieving true diversity and inclusion is the right thing to do. It is also the smart thing for our business. So we strongly encourage women, veterans, people with disabilities, people of color and gender nonconforming candidates to apply.

The New York Times Company is an Equal Opportunity Employer and does not discriminate on the basis of an individual's sex, age, race, color, creed, national origin, alienage, religion, marital status, pregnancy, sexual orientation or affectional preference, gender identity and expression, disability, genetic trait or predisposition, carrier status, citizenship, veteran or military status and other personal characteristics protected by law. All applications will receive consideration for employment without regard to legally protected characteristics. The New York Times Company will consider qualified applicants, including those with criminal histories, in a manner consistent with the requirements of applicable state and local "Fair Chance" laws.
