JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Senior Writer/Editor is responsible for making National Geographic the go-to source for explaining relevant topics in science, animals, travel and history, and to provide a deeper understanding of our natural world that inspire audiences to care. This role oversees content creation from assigning, editing and execution across all platforms, and works with our partners on the business side to turn explainer content into a franchise that is attractive to advertisers and publishing partners. This role is able to motivate editorial teams to produce stories and other content across platforms that is surprising, sensitive and informative. This editor needs to have broad knowledge of the topic areas at the core of National Geographic, active involvement with sub-editors in the editing and packaging of articles from conception to publication, and collaboration with other areas of the organization including the National Geographic Channel, National Geographic Society and The Walt Disney Company at large.

 

Responsibilities:

The Senior Writer/Editor will contribute to strategic planning and decision-making about content that fulfills the mission of National Geographic to inform the public about animals, history, science, and travel; help direct and develop editorial content that positions National Geographic at the forefront of multiplatform storytelling and content distribution. Specifically:

  • Oversee and help to direct all of National Geographic’s explainer coverage by identifying, developing, and promoting potential pieces; by evaluating newsworthy topics and most optimal publishing platform to gain maximum reach in a timely way; by working with the desk leads and other editors to produce authoritative, high-quality content, advising on all aspects of our digital coverage; by collaborating with the Managing Editor, Digital and with other divisions of National Geographic Partners and the National Geographic Society.
  • Work with writers, photo editors, photographers, video producers and the graphics team to plan coverage and approach. Top edit all explainer pieces being edited by other editors, working closely with the Executive Editors, Managing Editor/Digital, Director of Visual and Immersive Experiences, and Features Editor.
  • Be knowledgeable about current stories involving animals, history, science, and travel. Evaluate interest, storytelling, logic, style, readability, publishing cadence and editorial strategy. Work with writers to improve articles through revision, execution and promotion. Help recruit new talent to produce groundbreaking content. Work with research, caption writers, illustrations editors, designers, and map editors to package the article in a coherent and compelling whole; work with the business side to package and monetize the product.
  • Is able to represent National Geographic at industry conferences. Be a leader in outreach on projects with other partners, planning and participating in such programs that address important issues and promote the National Geographic mission.

 

Requirements:

  • An undergraduate degree is required.
  • Future-forward content strategizer, writer and editor.
  • Superior line editing and conceptual editing skills.
  • Big-picture editorial skills and digital thinking.
  • Ability with digitally optimized headlines and text.
  • Highly developed ability to recognize and create story ideas, including ideas with major visual components.
  • Experience working with documentary-style photography.
  • Cheerful unflappability under publishing pressures.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with multi-personality story teams.
  • Ability to help with recruiting and retaining a talented staff and attract the best freelance writers and photographers.
  • Must work well with many different divisions as well as those outside National Geographic.
