Nucleus: our design system...

Our design system is called Nucleus, just like the nucleus of an atom, it is the core of our user experiences.

It is made of different parts:

  • a set of design, creative, and accessibility principles that set a high standard for design and engineering
  • a process and governance model that is adapted to the teams consuming our components
  • a library of components, the most tangible part of the system
  • a comprehensive documentation
  • a HTML prototyping tool
  • a community of user experience designers and engineers

When we set out to build Nucleus, our 3-year roadmap was something like this:

2019: we prove the value of a design system and its benefits for British Gas

2020: we drive adoption across the British Gas digital teams

2021: we scale Nucleus to our other brands

We are in 2021, and on track. We have started opening up our design system to the wider Centrica digital community. These are exciting times for us, and our team needs you!

The role:

The three main aspects of the User Experience Designer role in our team would be collaborative, inclusive, and user-centered design. We work with designers across product teams to understand the needs and contexts of use so we can design and build accessible and usable components.

This role is part of a growing multi-disciplinary team made of designers, engineers, and testers.

From conducting your user research, gathering requirements, running workshops; to designing and testing your work, you have a design process that is similar to the design thinking/double diamond approach: identifying and validating a problem, defining and refining a solution.

About you:

  • You are comfortable working both independently and collaboratively.
  • You can think in systems, and take into account the different contexts and outcomes of your design contributions.
  • You are not afraid of HTML and CSS (but don't worry, you won't be coding components!)
  • You enjoy communicating your designs and collaborating with a community of designers, developers, and their stakeholders.
  • You enjoy working in an agile environment.
  • You want to help us evolve the system, bring your expertise, and elevate Nucleus with it.
  • You are an accessibility advocate.
  • And ultimately, you love learning. You may not have all the skills for this role but you look forward to learning and growing with us.

Tools:

The one source of truth is our coded components library.

We maintain a sketch library with our foundations and components as a toolbox to create new components and interactions.

We encourage designers to use HTML high fidelity prototyping whenever they don't need a new component.

Our user experience designers have used Sketch, Axure, Figma in the past. We try not to be tied to a piece of software, even though right now our common format is Sketch.

We like to keep it as lean as possible. And we love evolving. Bring your tools to the table!

Location:

The user experience designer role is officially based in our headquarter offices in Windsor. But in practice, it will be mostly remote with occasional in person workshops and team days to get together.
