Senior Social Editor
Job
The i Paper is looking for a Senior Social Editor with extensive experience bringing digital journalism to audiences on social media. As one of the newsroom’s audience specialists, this person has a thorough understanding of social platforms, and applies that knowledge to distribute i's journalism, repurposing it into engaging content for each platform, in a swift, impactful and above all accurate manner.
You will be a data-savvy decision maker, using on- and off-platform analytics to drive both everyday priorities and long-term strategy. In addition to sharing i's journalism on social platforms, you’ll also work with reporters and editors across the newsroom on how social media and readers’ voices can inform our journalism, by feeding back social-driven story ideas.
This role also works closely with other members of the Audience Team to support the newsroom's wider digital publishing strategy.
This role will report to the Deputy Head of Audience (Distribution).
Key areas of Responsibility:
- Working with the Deputy Head of Audience (Distribution) to determine the team's daily workflow across all social and 3rd party platforms
- Developing a thorough understanding the role that social and other third party platforms play in the acquisition and retention of digital subscribers
- Sharing responsibility for setting the Social team’s agenda for the day. Determining the schedule for each platform, feeding back on social performance and trends during newsroom-wide meetings and helping coordinate a team of both full-time and freelance staff
- Using social platform data and onsite analytics to drive smart decisions. Developing a keen sense of audience preferences for each of i’s key social platforms and using these learnings to foster a shared sense of understanding among the team and wider newsroom
- Constantly working to innovate new formats and posts to maximise reach, engagement and growth of i's social, third-party referrers and messaging service accounts
- Contributing to i's strategy around third-party referrers, such as Apple and Flipboard. Working to maintain our relationships with these platforms and explore new opportunities
- Write strong and punchy headlines for social, homepage and SEO when required.
- Working with the wider audience team on SEO, newsletters and homepage to develop the skills to cover their output when required.
- Good knowledge of media law and the Editors’ Code of Practice
- Commitment to i's editorial standards of impartial and incisive coverage. Appreciation for i’s audience and tone, and how to write stories that will appeal to our readers
