We’re looking for a content designer to join our digital team to work on our design system, Elements.

You will be part of the Springer Nature global UX team and embedded within the design system team working to build, scale and maintain Elements. The role can be based in Lisbon, Berlin or London with remote working available up to 4 days per week.

About you:

You are a content designer or UX writer with previous experience of making products and services easier for your customers to use and understand.

You will have experience of pulling together content from a range of sources and asking the right questions to be able to write content that is appropriate and useful for your audience.

You are able to work closely with user researchers, designers and developers and are comfortable working individually whilst still being highly collaborative.

Previous experience of working with design systems or other technical products is not required but would be useful.

The Product:

Springer Nature is a global scientific publisher helping to advance science and accelerate solutions to address the world’s urgent challenges. We’re seeking someone to join the team responsible for building our design system, Elements.

Elements enables teams across Springer Nature to create brilliant user experiences for all its brands with maximum efficiency and technical flexibility.

Our goal is to create one place to find and contribute visual styles, reusable UI components, design patterns and guidelines for creating user interfaces, and a way to use them in our products and services.

The team:

We work in an agile way so you will need to work collaboratively with designers, developers, and others in order to iteratively deliver and refine your work, whilst helping to develop a content strategy and direction for Elements.

As the team is part of a wider group you will be expected to work with the rest of the UX and frontend development teams to ensure that your work fits with the wider context of improving the researcher experience on our content platforms.

What you will be doing:

Within 3 months:

You will:

  • Understand our internal customers, the way the digital department works and the problems we’re trying to solve.
  • Audit existing documentation relating to Elements and prioritise improvements to the topics covered, clarity and tone of voice.
  • Meet with stakeholders, developers and designers to understand their roles and responsibilities in relation to Elements.
  • Work with our brand teams and UI designers to update and improve our style guides.
  • Improve documentation of our existing components, focusing on what they are used for and how they are used.
  • Work with the team to roll out the design system and encourage adoption.
  • Be trained to be able push changes to our Github repository.

6 months and beyond:

You will:

  • Support the team in evangelising the use of the design system and help to put in place a strategy for scaling and governance.
  • In conjunction with our in-house accessibility experts, begin an audit of our design system’s accessibility guidance and make improvements.
  • Engage in user research and discovery to ensure the design system’s content is meeting the needs of its users.
  • Identify common patterns used across products and services in our portfolio and work with the Elements team to document and rationalise them.
  • Help to establish content design standards and best practice within the Elements design system team and design system contributors.

At Springer Nature, we value the diversity of our teams and work to build an inclusive culture, where people are treated fairly and can bring their differences to work and thrive. We empower our colleagues and value their diverse perspectives as we strive to attract, nurture and develop the very best talent.

Springer Nature was awarded Diversity Team of the Year at the 2022 British Diversity Awards. Find out more about our DEI work.
