Microsoft Teams is the fastest-growing app in the history of our company. The recent launch of Teams Preview marks an exciting new era for the product, bringing performance gains, new capabilities and mission critical integrations into products and services, making Teams the best-in-class collaborative platform. 
 
We’re looking for a Principal Designer with a strong background in enterprise products to lead integrations with other Microsoft products to craft seamless and delightful experiences. As part of our cross-org design team, you’ll play a pivotal role in identifying new growth opportunities for collaboration, shaping compelling experiences that empower people around the world to achieve more together. The position will also spearhead the vision of how we plan on driving more coherent experiences across the Microsoft ecosystem, while driving Teams growth at the same time.

As a leader on our team, building strong partnerships with engineering, product management, and design teams across various locations will be crucial in this role. 

The ideal candidate will possess strong personal and organizational skills, innate creativity, and the versatility to tackle a diverse range of design challenges. Excellent communication skills are a must, as you will need to convey your ideas through a variety of mediums including wireframe flows, detailed mocks, working prototypes, and clear and concise presentations, accompanied by comprehensive documentation. 
 
We work closely with designers and stakeholders from across Microsoft, fostering a supportive environment where we can collectively drive success. Our collaboration goes beyond just Teams and extends to multiple products within the company, allowing us to make a meaningful impact together.

  • Influence product strategy and coordinate stakeholders and teams towards successful end-to-end experiences. 
  • Lead cross-collaboration to ensure readiness for shipping. 
  • Communicate design expertise and maturity. 
  • Inspire stakeholders and senior leadership through storytelling. 
  • Drive success via empowerment and modeling design leadership. 
  • Provide leadership and guidance to the product design team. 
  • Embrace company culture, values, and leadership principles. 
  • Help track consensus and differences of goals and continued success for all groups. 
  • Leverage stakeholders capabilities and aspirations to encourage team cohesion. 

Qualifications:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Human Computer Interaction, or related field AND 8+ years’ experience working in product or service design, using design thinking to solve problems
    • OR Master's Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Human Computer Interaction, or related field AND 6+ years’ experience working in product or service design, using design thinking to solve problems
    •  OR equivalent experience. 

 PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Diverse portfolio showcasing your skills and accomplishments. 
  • History of having a significant impact on shipped products. 
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Figma. 
  • Graphic and visual design experience is ideal.
  • Exceptional communication, storytelling, and presentation skills. 
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across teams and persuade others. 
  • Strong drive for attention to detail and self-motivation. 
  • Team-oriented approach and a passion for inspiring others to achieve success together. 

Microsoft has different base pay ranges for different work locations within the United States, which allows us to pay employees competitively and consistently in different geographic markets (see below). The range above reflects the potential base pay across the U.S. for this role (except as noted below); the applicable base pay range will depend on what ultimately is determined to be the candidate’s primary work location.

Individual base pay depends on various factors, in addition to primary work location, such as complexity and responsibility of role, job duties/requirements, and relevant experience and skills. Base pay ranges are reviewed and typically updated each year. Offers are made within the base pay range applicable at the time.

At Microsoft certain roles are eligible for additional rewards, including merit increases, annual bonus and stock. These awards are allocated based on individual performance. In addition, certain roles also have the opportunity to earn sales incentives based on revenue or utilization, depending on the terms of the plan and the employee’s role. U.S.-based employees have access to medical, dental, and vision insurance, a 401(k) plan and company match, short-term and long-term disability coverage, basic life insurance, and wellbeing benefits, among others. U.S.-based employees also receive, per calendar year, up to 10 scheduled paid holidays, and up to 80 hours Holistic Health Time Off. Additionally, hourly/non-exempt employees accrue up to 120 hours paid vacation time, and salaried/exempt employees have Discretionary Time Off (DTO).

The way we define roles includes two things: discipline (the type of work) and career stage (scope and complexity). The career stage has two parts – the first identifies whether the role is a manager (M), an individual contributor (IC), an admin-technician-retail (ATR) job, or an intern. The second part identifies the relative seniority of the role – a higher number (or later letter alphabetically in the case of ATR) indicates greater scope and complexity.
