The UK Insight Team will be based in both London and Leeds, with a focus on uncovering and breaking untold stories which hide beneath the surface. It will be a touch point into BBC News, especially for underserved audiences. Like the UK Specialist Story Teams, it will have a focus on innovative digital storytelling, diversity of content and ideas, and reflecting the whole of the country. In addition, it will continue to produce long-form documentaries for BBC 3, as well as stories and content for BBC News, both on and off platform.

The UK Insight Team will develop strong partnerships with News Audiences and the RAISED network, and will also support emerging talent and ideas from across BBC News, working particularly closely with the Next Generation Editorial panel.

Role Responsibility:

The News Editor for the UK Insight team will lead the Leeds based team, as well as working with the rest of the UK Insight team management to drive the journalism and taking editorial oversight of longer term plans. The News Editor will be based in Leeds.  

Our News Editor roles are all different however they all share a single objective - to drive high impact journalism from concept to delivery with a focus on agenda-setting and original reporting. Working with the Senior News Editor, you’ll play a key leadership role in a large team, champion new ways of working, prioritise digital and use audience data and insight to ensure our content reaches all our audiences, including those underserved. You’ll have a responsibility to ensure a culture of collaboration, listening and respect amongst staff.

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Experience of managing a large multi-skilled team, with strong leadership skills and the ability to deal with daily and long-term editorial demands.
  • A passion for breaking stories and delivering high-impact original journalism, with previous examples of leading a project or team which produced agenda-setting reporting.
  • A thorough understanding of what makes great digital content including text, video and social media.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the relevant team’s specialism, able to explain complex issues and represent the story team’s journalism in key editorial meetings.
  • A demonstrable commitment to improving diversity within the BBC’s coverage and staffing, representing all audiences and all points of view.
  • Experience and knowledge of audience insight tools, with evidence of having embraced audience engagement and insights in previous work.
  • Significant, relevant programme making experience with exceptional production skills and editorial judgement.   
  • For UK Insight, this also includes experience commissioning and executive-producing longform content.
