Ready to join one of the most successful fashion brands on the high street? Do you have a passion for fashion? Driven to achieve? United to win? If your answers are yes, we think you’ll love it here on the Island.

From our first shop in the remains of a North London bombsite in the 1940s, to now over 250 stores across the UK, Ireland and internationally. We are known for our stylish, affordable fashion and we like to shout-it loud.

Our Island community is everything and we are stronger together. Every Islander counts in making fashion a force for good and we value individuality and difference. Exceptional people have made River Island a success for over 70 years. Together we will continue to do so in the years ahead.

We are one team. We are the difference. We are River Island.

Who you’ll work with:

You’ll be part of a collaborative design team, who helped create highly-rated customer experiences - our iOS app has a 4.9 rating in the App store! You’ll work under the guidance of our Head of UX, alongside fellow designers, UX researchers, product managers, and engineering teams. We're split across Tribes, but you'll likely be working closely with another designer, and regularly catch up with your peers.

We have an established career framework in place for our design team, so your manager will ensure you have the opportunity to learn and grow in your career, and will work with you to coach you on both your design and your people skills.

What you’ll work on:

You’ll work on the design of three channels (primarily): web, app, and in-store. You’ll help us research customer problems, identify opportunities, and define how the experience works, looks, and feels.

Design activities:

You’ll work across the full spectrum of UX: working with UX researchers or conducting research yourself, discovery, running workshops, usability and A/B testing, prototyping, interaction, UI, and UX design.

In discovery, you’ll gather a broad set of data, from customers, stakeholders - qual and quant - you’ll be challenged to synthesise ambiguous, complex data, and make sense of it for the organisation and for your design work. After this, you'll be working to create polished design assets to be delivered and handed over to our developers.

Retention:

We're working hard to ensure our customers have a joined-up experience between our stores and our digital experience, and loyalty and retention is key to that. Part of your remit will be to explore ways we can encourage our customers to come back again and again.

Breezy checkout:

We’re always looking for ways to make our shopping experience easier for our customers. Everyone in our design team spends time looking for opportunities to improve business critical user journeys, like checkout. You’ll spend time with users looking for ways to improve checkout, so that we can make the checkout feel less like a form-filling exercise.

The design system:

We’ve recently implemented a new brand, and are still exploring how it should be used in a digital context. There’s lots of work to define the system, and advocate its use across the entire organisation. You’ll be expected to use and improve the system; testing its limits and documenting how to use it.

 How you’ll work:

As part of a tribe you’ll work with a senior designer, but will share the work between you; solving problems to deliver impactful solutions that solve customer problems and move business metrics. You’ll work on opportunities within that tribe’s remit, facilitating better work through collaboration and critique. You’ll be an active contributor to the roadmap and strategic planning for your product, working closely with a PM and will act as a key member of the team.

As a midweight designer, you'll have the opportunity to work alongside and learn from senior designers and researchers to help you define and refine your work, while still having the autonomy to do your own discovery and make design decisions.

You’ll often work with stakeholders to understand their objectives and concerns - presenting them with both work and advocating for the opportunities you will identify.

River Island takes pride in our friendly, people-oriented culture. We have high expectations of your performance, but we’re a relaxed, convivial company; we like to keep it casual, caring and low-key. We’re that way after decades of working and growing together. Our culture is stable in a way that younger organisations can’t match. You’ll enjoy working here; employees are extremely loyal to their teams and organisation.

Who we’re looking for:

  • An experienced end-to-end UX designer who also has a keen eye for UI and visual design.
  • Comfortable using design software (we use Figma).
  • Experience either conducting usability testing or collaborating with User Researchers.
  • Great communication skills, with the ability to adapt and engage with stakeholders.
  • Collaborative and interested in learning and developing your skill set.
  • Previous experience facilitating workshops and chairing meetings.
  • Ability to balance user needs with business needs.
  • Great at self-organising and prioritising your own workload.

And wait, did we mention the perks!?

  • Discount – Generous 50% staff discount so you can treat yourself!
  • RI Rewards – More discounts and vouchers with Perks at Work.
  • Island culture – We have a gym, subsidised restaurant & Costa, and a bargain staff shop, all onsite!
  • Work that stays at work – Flexible working is a given, on top of payday early finishes and Summer Fridays.
  • Health Benefits – Childcare vouchers, eye vouchers and more.
  • Giver Island – Give as you earn scheme, a ‘Giver Island’ day each year and matched funding.
  • Training on the job – Support with upskilling skills through on the job training and qualifications.
  • Pension - A contributory private pension scheme.
  • Holiday - 25 days paid holiday.
