London News Editor - The New York TimesThis job listing has expired
The New York Times has an opening for the critical position of London News Editor. From a desk in the center of the London newsroom, this person is a key figure in the Times’ daily efforts to cover breaking news around the world (sometimes in America, too.)
Beginning in the London morning, this person is scanning Europe, the Middle East, Africa and beyond, to insure that the Times is on top of whatever news stories are breaking. You need to be able to take a raw 500-word feed from a stringer and turn it into a publishable story on deadline. You also need to synthesize feeds from correspondents reporting under tough conditions to draft a clear, fast news story, ideally with a touch of analytical insight. When a big story is underway – a bombing in Manchester; a terror attack in Paris; an unexpected election result in Britain – you are often at the center of it all.
It can be pressure packed. On busy news days, you’ll need to match, and surpass, our competitors. It can also be one of the most exhilarating jobs at the Times. This is an opportunity to run Live Chats, Live Briefings and much more. We expect this person to be looking for topics that can be elevated through visual-first storytelling. Ideally, a candidate will also have a comfort and nimbleness in using social media as a reporting tool – whether on breaking news or in spotting trending topics worth jumping on.
News judgment is essential, as well as collegiality, diplomacy and tact. This person must work smoothly with correspondents and stringers, while also collaborating with other editors across several desks in London, Hong Kong and New York. Editing experience, or experience anchoring big news stories, is also a plus. This is a great, important job. We want someone who loves news, who is endlessly curious, who has a knack for untold stories.
