We are looking for an exceptional Head of Product Design to set service and user experience design to deliver a world-class experience across all energy customer-facing products and services.

As Head of Product Design, you will oversee the whole design function: visual styling, service and user experience research and design for the entire energy product offering. You will be leading a team accountable for designing usable, valuable and viable product solutions meeting customer and commercial needs.

Role Accountabilities: What will you be doing?

  • Drive service and user experience vision and strategy to deliver a world-class experience across all customer-facing products and journeys 

  • Champion design thinking in British Gas Energy, develop a world class design team and support wider teams with design thinking practices 

  • Advocate a user experience centered mindset across the organisation and drive and embed a culture of experimentation and innovation 

  • Develop digital visual identity, guidelines and standards that support overall brand identity and ambition 

  • Develop and maintain common design work processes and tools to drive efficiency and delivery velocity across British Gas Energy 

  • Use your deep expertise in user and visual and experience design to provide advice and direction to the design team 

  • Manage and prioritise the design backlog, working with Product Lead and Product Owners to ensure design activity supports the digital and offline delivery roadmap 

  • Provide quality control over design outputs and production 

  • Deliver clear specs for the engineering team and discuss trade-offs of different approaches 

  • Develop a design system to enable rapid delivery and consistency 

  • Work with research & insights to undertake testing activity to refine and optimise design 

  • Support Customer Strategy & Proposition Managers in undertaking customer-led design-thinking approaches to proposition design 

About You:
You are customer focused, always striving to do better for our customers. You have a proven track record in designing product and user experiences through research, design-thinking, customer-led and lean design methodologies and testing. A creative thinker with an insistence on following human-centred design principles, you are curious and actively challenges the status quo to deliver better outcomes.

You’re a great fit if you care deeply about your team and about enabling them to do great work. You don’t have an ego and you put trust into your team. This role isn’t about telling designers how to design, it’s about creating an environment where people enjoy themselves and do their best work. Whilst the designers are designing, you are always looking for ways to take things to the next level – you optimise and grow DesignOps and ResearchOps, you grow design maturity across the business, you offer strategic support and consultation into the leadership team. You aren’t just building a team to deliver in the short term, you are helping shape the future of the energy industry experience.
