The New York Times is looking for a developer to join the Graphics Department to build publishing and storytelling tools that directly power our interactive and visual journalism across platforms.

Your core responsibility would be owning and improving Preview, the development tool that produces many of the Times’s highest-profile stories, including data visualizations, multimedia narratives, breaking news, and sensitive investigations. More than 100 journalists and developers use Preview to design, code and publish their work, often on deadline.

You would collaborate directly with Times journalists to build features, fix problems, and help the newsroom publish better stories more quickly. You’d create solutions that work for a range of technical and non-technical users. You’d also sometimes help users solve problems, and contribute to published work.

Because Preview supports a variety of workflows, it spans servers, command-line tools, web UIs, frontend components, and more. We don’t expect you to have experience with all of these types of work, but familiarity with some of them is a plus.

As part of your cover letter, please describe or link to an example of code or a tool you’ve created for other people.

Location: NY.

Requirements:

  • Experience with building software or tools for other people.

  • Experience working collaboratively with members of a multidisciplinary team.

  • Experience with Node, Python or similar languages.

  • Experience with HTML, CSS and JavaScript.

  • Experience with git, command-line tools or servers a plus.

  • Experience with interactive graphics or journalism is a strong plus.

This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.

The New York Times is committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce, one that reflects the varied global community we serve. Achieving true diversity and inclusion is the right thing to do. It is also the smart thing for our business. So we strongly encourage women, veterans, people with disabilities, people of color and gender nonconforming candidates to apply.

All applications will receive consideration for employment without regard to legally protected characteristics.
