Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) is looking for a front-end developer with a keen eye for UI design to work with a highly collaborative team to develop our public-facing website. You will play an integral role in the specification, design, build, test, and support of our design system and website. We work on a variety of projects in support of our customers, as well as the Sales and Marketing teams at SEL.

You will be responsible for working with a systems mindset, ensuring the alignment of user interface design and design system requirements, optimizing web pages for maximum efficiency and maintaining brand consistency across all web pages, among other duties.

You will work in teams alongside User Interface Designers, User Experience Designers and Full Stack Developers to ensure all elements of web creation are consistent. This requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work in a multidisciplinary team with other professionals such as User Experience Designers and Full Stack Developers.

  • Ensure user experience determines design choices.

  • Develop features to enhance the user experience.

  • Maintain and grow design system.

  • Anticipate how aspects of the system will be used by designers and editors, and design for the best default user experience.

  • Strike a balance between functional and aesthetic design.

  • Ensure web design is optimized for smartphones.

  • Build reusable code for future use.

  • Ensure all designs follow accessibility and inclusivity standards defined by WCAG, ADA.

  • Optimize web pages for maximum speed and scalability.

  • Maintain brand consistency throughout design.

  • Keep abreast of latest and emerging technologies.

  • Follow and apply SEL Values, Principles of Operations, and World Class Manufacturing Principles.

Required Qualifications:

  • Degree in Web Design, Computer Science, related field, or equivalent experience.

  • Understanding of key visual design principles.

  • Proficiency with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

  • Proficiency with a CSS preprocessor like SASS or LESS.

  • Experience with responsive and adaptive design.

  • Experience with Design Systems including component design and documentation.

  • Provide portfolio of interaction design, design systems, and product design work.

  • Experience working with Figma, Sketch, or other UI design tools.

  • Understanding of SEO principles.

  • Good problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent verbal communication skills.

  • Good interpersonal skills.
