The BBC News Channel is Britain’s most watched news channel, based at New Broadcasting House in London. The majority of staff are newsroom-based, and work on the day’s live output (on air 0900-0000). BBC World News is the BBC’s international news channel with about 100 million weekly viewers across the world. The core production team is also based in New Broadcasting House, overseeing live production and presentation across 24 hours a day.
 

Role Responsibility:

We are recruiting an Executive News Editor to lead a combined team across both BBC TV news channels, providing BBC News around the clock, in the UK and around the world. You'll be responsible for serving global as well as UK audiences.  You'll manage and develop the team of presenters, in conjunction with the Editor, TV Bulletins, and develop BBC World News in line with the editorial and strategic objectives set out by the Senior News Controllers of Output and International Services. 

You'll line manage Heads of Journalism, specifically Head of News, Radio 5 Live and the Senior News Editor, Weather.  You'll contribute fully to the Commissioning Group of Editors, including open collaboration and sharing to deliver maximum benefit to audiences. You'll work with the Editor, TV Bulletins on the future structure and patterns of the television news teams and movement between them.
 

The Ideal Candidate:

  • An expert in your field, providing professional, inspiring and inclusive leadership and acting as a role model to teams and colleagues.
  • Adept at managing numerous and diverse senior and executive level stakeholders, often operating under tight timescales and managing competing priorities.
  • Experience of operating at a senior level in the public sector or public service and/or dealing with external/governmental stakeholders.
  • A convincing and persuasive communicator, required to influence  teams, as well as senior stakeholders, able to establish effective and collaborative relations across BBC departments, and external agencies/stakeholders where required.
  • Effective conduit to communication and influence through the management hierarchy.
  • Awareness of current markets, trends and issues within the broadcasting industry and wider media sector, and deep knowledge of output across the whole of the BBC, as well as that of competitors.
  • Internally and/or externally recognised source for creative thinking and innovation.
  • Functional expert with broad and comprehensive understanding of theories, systems and practices relevant to own functional area.
  • Thorough understanding of the way in which programmes are commissioned, financed and produced.
  • Broad and comprehensive understanding of the BBC’s legal, contractual agreements and regulations as they apply to programme making, broadcasting and digital media.
  • Experience in managing significant budgets and understanding key financial drivers.
