A new and exciting opportunity for a skilled and experienced Editorial Manager to join a highly prestigious and global pharmaceutical company based in Manchester has just become available. You will be responsible for the day to day management of a busy team of Healthcare analysts and overseeing the sub-editorial team which is based in their Manchester office.

You will be an excellent communicator, as well as having a strong foundation of research skills with a high degree of numeracy, excellent writing skills and capacity for critical thinking. You will be experienced in managing the daily output of a research team (scheduling work, assisting with editing and proofing and managing deadlines) and the skills and career development of team members.

Research roles based in the company’s Manchester office will focus on the Healthcare sector. As such, candidates with knowledge of the sector may have an advantage. However, an interest in the sector, a genuine and demonstrable passion for current affairs and the ability to challenge people’s thinking and improve their analysis, even without extensive sector experience, are the key requirements. Applicants will be confident and comfortable managing a team, as well as representing the work of their team to our customers and to other parts of our organisation. They will be highly organised, a proactive communicator and problem solver and have a passion for the development of junior team members.

Role responsibilities:

  • Overseeing a comprehensive schedule of daily, monthly and quarterly research publications, including scheduling and deadline management.
  • Oversight of sector forecasting methodology and accuracy.
  • Quality control for Healthcare analysis and publications, including the quality and accuracy of views and the standards of writing and presentation.
  • Supporting the Healthcare team in structuring analysis to clearly present their argument and via robust and regular editing and proofreading of the team’s output.
  • Challenging the views and argumentation of analysts on the team to strengthen the views and content and to foster a culture of discussion and debate within the team.
  • Meeting customers, representing the Healthcare and Research teams as a senior member of the research team. Play a proactive role in supporting Marketing and Sales teams, suggesting opportunities to engage our customers via webinars and presentations.
  • Dealing with inbound customer queries around the Healthcare content, supporting members of the team to ensure we deliver the best standard of customer service.
  • Being a mouthpiece for and champion of healthcare views across the wider research team - ensuring those views and known by and represented in the work of the wider team.
  • Contributing ideas for new processes and methodologies to support efficiencies and the ongoing development of our research, data and forecasts.
  • Completing performance and review documents for analysts in your team, setting objectives to challenge your team members as individuals and working closely with them on an ongoing basis to help develop their skills and careers.
  • Act as the senior representative of the business in their Manchester office.
  • Act as the hiring manager for research roles in Manchester, liaising with internal and external recruiters.
  • Overseeing the training of all research and sub-editorial staff in the Manchester office, ensuring training is up to date.
  • Providing daily management support to the sub-editorial team members based in Manchester, who are line managed in London.
  • Acting as the standard-bearer for the research team culture in the Manchester office, ensuring high levels of subject matter engagement, attention to detail, adherence to deadlines, a strong degree of teamwork and collaboration and a culture of debate and discussion.

Skills required:

Essential:

  • Previous management experience, both day to day operational (scheduling, QC) and skills and career development (objective setting, mentoring).
  • Previous research and analytical work experience - experience producing forward-looking research and analysis, preferably data-driven.
  • Experience editing and proofreading research, providing immediate edits and suggested means for future improvement.
  • Interest in the Healthcare sector with an awareness of current sector trends.
  • A strong and demonstrable interest in economics, business and current affairs.
  • Excellent problem solving and creative thinking ability.
  • Intellectual curiosity and the ability to develop an argument, challenge logic and ask probing questions on a subject on which you may not be an expert.
  • Customer-facing experience.
  • An excellent standard of written English and very strong verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Attention to detail, across both the written word and data.
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines and excellent time management skills.

Desirable:

  • Previous work experience within the healthcare sector, or a sub-sector, preferably producing written research and analysis.
  • Experience forecasting.
  • Biological, life sciences, economics, finance, international relations, political science degree, or similar.
