The Personalization team makes deciding what to play next easier and more enjoyable for every listener. From Blend to Discover Weekly, we’re behind some of Spotify’s most-loved features. We built them by understanding the world of music and podcasts better than anyone else. Join us and you’ll keep millions of users listening by making great recommendations to each and every one of them. We ask that our team members be physically located in Central European time or Eastern Standard/Daylight time zones for the purposes of our collaboration hours.

We are looking for a passionate and seasoned Design Director to join Spotify’s Personalization team. Our goal is to make every listening session more enriching through personalization and discovery. You will be owning the charge on reimagining our content programming experience. The content is why people come to Spotify—to be entertained, encouraged, and informed. You'll help find innovative ways to combine our understanding of the world of music and podcasts with our ~400M users’ unique tastes, bringing fans an experience tailored uniquely to them, and help them find new artists they love.

What you'll do:

  • Manage a team of product designers and product design managers, supporting them as they drive their personal and professional growth. The overall team is 10 designers.
  • Partner with Product, Tech, and Insights leads to collectively set the mission, vision and strategy for a group of ~230 people. You will help inspire this group to be healthy, and impactful.
  • Work closely with senior leadership to influence and build strategic visions for the product and then deliver on those visions.
  • Work with your designers and Insights partners to ensure there is a deep understanding of user needs and that design solutions deliver meaningful impact.
  • Challenge the status quo on innovation, creativity, and quality of design work.
  • Promote your team’s work to drive alignment across the other teams.
  • Proactively look for and solve high-level issues and opportunities.
  • Advocate and promote the role of Design in innovative machine learning technologies.

Who you are:

  • You have 7-10+ years of experience running design teams, specifically leading managers in an agile product development environment.
  • You have a product design background related to recommendations and personalization, and are well versed in data-informed product design and development.
  • You are an inspirational leader. You have a human-centric approach in everything you do—from developing phenomenal people to shipping meaningful impact.
  • You are comfortable working in ambiguous spaces that are technically complex. The thought of applying design thinking to metadata, algorithms, and machine learning genuinely excites you.
  • You’re a fantastic communicator and compelling storyteller. Your written and verbal communication skills help you work cross-functionally with internal stakeholders.
  • You have a proven track record to influence decision making at all levels within an organization, and in a variety of contexts.
  • You have an online portfolio or PDF that you can share with us. Applications without a portfolio are unlikely to be considered.

Where you'll be:

  • Where in the world? For this role, it can be in Boston, New York, or Stockholm with frequent collaboration with teams in London, and other European and US locations.
  • Working hours? We operate within the Eastern US and Central European time zones for collaboration and ask that all be located in that time zone.
  • Prefer an office to work from home instead? Not a problem! We have plenty of options for your working preferences.

Our global benefits:

  • Extensive learning opportunities, through our dedicated team, GreenHouse.
  • Flexible share incentives letting you choose how you share in our success.
  • Global parental leave, six months off - fully paid - for all new parents.
  • All The Feels, our employee assistance program and self-care hub.
  • Flexible public holidays, swap days off according to your values and beliefs.
  • Spotify On Tour, join your colleagues on trips to industry festivals and events.
