Facebook Reality Labs (FRL) brings together a world-class R&D team of researchers, developers, and engineers with the shared goal of developing AR and VR across the spectrum. We're creating new possibilities across the full span of how people interact with these new technologies. As the Design Director of Facebook Reality Labs (FRL) in Redmond, WA you will work with a world-class group of researchers, engineers and management developing the next generation of computing devices and technologies for augmented reality systems. Your main responsibilities will be to build and operate the design organization that supports our most advanced research efforts. This includes designing, hardware and software experiences that help our individual research initiatives meet their objectives.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Create a design organization that is best suited to support and advance our research efforts.

  • Work closely with research scientists, engineers, program managers and management to ensure design efforts are contributing to FRL goals.

  • Build, lead and mentor a team of designers and specialists, in a diverse set of research initiatives.

  • Build relationships with Research Science leads to determine needs and how Design can help advance their research.

  • Establish a strong design culture by staying at the forefront of technology and society.

  • Determine work streams for research design teams.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 10+ years of management and leadership experience.

  • BA/BS degree in a design related field or equivalent experience.

  • 10+ years of experience designing software.

  • User centered experience and knowledge applied to human interaction and shipping products.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Understand and practice of building real-time 3D and/or VR/AR experiences.

  • Experience working with research science or R&D teams.

  • Experience designing hardware or working with ID/HW teams.

  • Demonstrated ability of working in highly technical and ambiguous problems.
