Job Introduction:

The Express have an excellent opportunity for a Deputy Editor (Weekends) to join the team.

As Deputy Editor you will work closely with the Editor-in-Chief to ensure full responsibility for the Sunday Express and Saturday edition of the Daily Express. You will be responsible for leading the newsroom to enhancing the quality of the Sunday Express and Saturday edition of the Daily Express. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Editor-in-Chief in dealing with organisational, administrative and disciplinary issues.
  • Drive content of the Sunday Express and Saturday edition of the Daily Express, in accordance with IPSO and legal requirements.
  • Generate the lead award-winning campaigns and investigations across the,
  • Saturday edition of the Daily Express, the Sunday Express and other weekday editions.
  • To in flat planning the Sunday Express; reviewing material and aiding the design. To assist in flat planning the Saturday edition of the Daily Express.
  • Motivate and mentor staff.
  • Build the Express brand, ensuring the newspaper is at the heart of the coverage with agenda-setting exclusive news and feature stories.
  • Work closely with the Deputy Editor (Weekdays) to ensure a seven-day operation works efficiently and effectively.
  • Liaise with executives at Express Online to ensure collaboration with the digital team.
  • Assist the commercial team to optimise, grow and commercialise.
  • Complete all tasks accurately and in line with budget requirements.

The Ideal Candidate:

  • NCTJ diploma or equivalent.
  • A skilled journalist with a strong understanding of news/features reporting and story structure. 
  • Previous experience in a fast-paced newsroom.
  • The ability to lead and manage a fast-paced, high-pressured newsroom.
  • A multi-tasker with the ability to prioritise effectively, with excellent diary management.
  • The ability to make critical decisions and work well under pressure.
  • Excellent contacts.
