Copy Editor - CLC
This job listing has expired JobRead and edit official versions of case law, both print and online. Analyze those cases to identify citation style, spelling, punctuation and grammar errors for review by the Reporter of Decisions prior to print and online publication.
Accountabilities:
1. Use the internet and other tools to retrieve cases issued by the courts for inclusion in the Official print product.
2. Rapidly review cases issued by courts to identify errors in citation style, spelling, punctuation, grammar and use of the English language.
3. Evaluate and correct deviations from established editorial guidelines and reference manuals, working alone, with other members of the team, and/or with the staff of the Office of the Reporter of Decisions.
4. Work with other members of the team and with the staff of the Office of the Reporter of Decisions so errors are identified and corrected before they are published in advance pamphlets or bound volumes of the Official Reports.
5. Effectively communicate and collaborate within the team, cross-functional team(s), and within the LN organization, thus representing the Official Reports team in a professional manner.
6. Demonstrated in-depth understanding and ability to apply rules of the style manual(s) preferred in the particular jurisdiction.
7. Demonstrated in-depth understanding and ability to apply rules of the editorial guidelines as required by LexisNexis.
8. Proven ability to use independent judgment and good communication skills when determining if changes need to be queried to the Reporter of Decisions.
9. Employ time management skills both in the office and when telecommuting to ensure that the strict production deadline requirements are met.
10. Meet aggressive production goals, while ensuring that the quality of the finished product meets defined standards.
11. Actively seek to understand customer needs (internal and external), business and corporate goals and online and print products.
12. Work towards process improvements in all aspects of job responsibilities.
13. Provide feedback diplomatically and accurately.
14. Ability to follow complex technical directions.
15. Other tasks and projects as assigned.
Qualifications:
1. An English degree, Journalism degree, or equivalent college-level work required.
2. Excellent copy editing skills including firm grasp of the principles of grammar and spelling.
3. Must be able to work independently or in conjunction with other to meet established deadlines and conform to all product specifications and requirements.
4. Superior level of attention to detail and demonstrated editorial/proofreading ability, including the ability to identify errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc.
5. Significant Windows and Microsoft Office suite experience (Excel, Word, Power Point and Sharepoint).
6. Significant Adobe and or PDF Annotator experience.
7. XML knowledge (mark-up and tagging).
