Microsoft Research is seeking a talented, multi-skilled designer to join us for a two year, Associate Researcher role. They will work with us in our Cambridge, UK lab on our Future of Work theme, looking particularly at how "knowledge" works in organizations that are diverse in size, industry and culture. We are looking, therefore, for a candidate with a demonstrable interest in the domain of work, the workplace and workflows. They should have experience working with a multi-disciplinary team of technologists, designers and social-scientists, bringing design and design thinking to a range of projects, demonstrated through portfolio. They should have extremely strong visual and communication skills, able to craft stories that present the context for new concepts. Experience building and prototyping software, to move ideas from concept towards reality, is essential. A proven ability to deal with ambiguity is a must have, with demonstrable experience for using design thinking and collaborative design tools to help build consensus within a group setting.

Cambridge, UK, was the clear choice for the first Microsoft Research lab established outside of the United States, due to its rich history as a center of higher learning and growing global impact as a leading high-tech hub.  From a beginning of just three researchers in 1997, to over 130 researchers and engineers today, the lab has established itself as a highly credible academic partner and flowing pipeline of technology transfers into the Microsoft business. The freedom of enquiry enabled by Microsoft’s approach to basic and applied research, coupled with the diversity of researchers and engineers in the Cambridge lab – ranging from sociologists, mathematicians, computer scientists, biological scientists and interaction designers – has produced contributions to some of Microsoft’s most successful products and services.

  • 5+ years of experience in interaction design.
  • Master’s degree or higher in Industrial Design, Graphic Design, Interaction Design or related field.
  • Experience in the design of systems for work and the workplace.
  • Skills in digital sketching and prototyping.
  • Facility to develop and lead design workshops with multi-disciplined groups.
  • Strong illustration and storytelling skills.
  • Confident presenting and promoting design solutions.
  • Online portfolio and portfolio review required.
