The opportunity:

The team works across several arts and crafts imprints, with most responsibilities lying with Herbert Press (craft books), Philip Wilson Publishers (art exhibition catalogues) and Bloomsbury Caravel (biographies).

This is an opportunity for an enthusiastic, self-motivated and highly organised individual to join the editorial team at Assistant Editor level. The role will provide administrative and organisational support for the rest of the team. It will also involve the development of editorial and project-management skills in an exciting and wide-ranging role, involving managing a small number of titles through the editorial process to publication, with this requiring liaison with authors, freelancers and in-house colleagues.

Working closely with the rest of the editorial team, this is a brilliant opportunity for an ambitious editorial assistant or assistant editor keen to take the next step in their publishing career.

The role:

  • Providing administrative support to the rest of the team.
  • Ensuring records and metadata are up to date in our title management system, Biblio, for both frontlist and backlist titles.
  • Managing various processes such as reprints and rebrands and the publication of paperback editions for relevant titles.
  • Assisting commissioning editors with the creation of catalogue copy, book fair materials and cover copy.
  • Project-managing a small number of titles through the editorial process, from acquisition to publication.
  • Briefing and managing freelance copy-editors, proofreaders, designers and indexers.
  • Liaising with authors, designers and copy-editors, collating comments and ensuring final files are ready for press on budget and on schedule.
  • Attending trade shows and other ad-hoc industry events.
  • Managing the Twitter account for Philip Wilson Publishers, in order to connect with the audience and promote both frontlist and backlist titles.
  • Working closely with marketing colleagues to check promotional material and advise on editorial queries.
  • Liaising with production colleagues to check and approve files before printing.
  • Creating cover briefs and monitoring progress with in-house designers.

Knowledge, skills and experience:

  • Meticulous attention to detail with strong organisational and time-management skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Strong proofreading and copy-editing skills.
  • Editorial experience in project management advantageous.
  • Experience of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word).
  • Basic knowledge of InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator helpful but not essential.
  • Interest, experience or knowledge of the arts and crafts helpful but not essential.
  • Knowledge of Biblio advantageous.
