Dissertation project for my Masters in Design for Change and the University of Edinburgh. My topic was about the role of design workshops in helping shift people's values related to commercial air travel. Mass consumption and production is on the rise which is contributing to ecological degradation. Society in the West needs to shift its materialistic and individualistic values to bring down consumption to sustainable levels. However, encouraging consumers to change their behaviour for the climate is difficult for a range of reasons. How can we have conversations with others around consumption and climate change in a constructive way? Using participatory design workshops, this project aims to get people to discuss, learn from each other, and reflect on excessive air travel. It also explores how the industry might look in the future and what social, political and economical implications might arise. Further detail about the project can be found on my website.
