ABOUT

The poster Свобода (Svoboda / Wolność / Freedom) was created as an expression of hope, compassion and willingness to help. Of course, I can't even really imagine what people affected by the war feel and think, and I was wondering if it was even appropriate to engage in this type of action. In the end, I figured if I could use my abilities to help (while creating something that would enable conversation about it) then it would be worth it. When I decided to do it, I spent some time thinking about the visual theme of this  potential poster / illustration. I decided to paint the huge Motherland Monument. This monument has been standing in Kiev since 1981. In the original, there is a hammer and sickle on the shield - and I have very conciously changed it. I am using this monument's image, in spite of history and its historical intention, to show that - in my opinion - the Ukrainian people have been fighting for independence continuously since the collapse of the Soviet Union - and the culmination of this struggle is the recent Russian invasion. These crimes cannot be forgotten, so if at least this poster is a reason to talk about it in a year, five or ten years, it has done its job.
IMPORTANT: I have been allocating all profits from the sales of this poster to help residents of Ukraine (the transferwere made to the account of the Polish Humanitarian Action). This will continue for every sale of this poster going forward as well.
