ABOUT
Purpose & Research Context
“The vast majority of the global increase in the size of middle classes occurs in Asia. Migration Rhythms is a research project from the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) that explores trajectories of upward social mobility in Asia. To find out more, visit .”
An individual’s personal journey of international labour migration can become an entire family’s pathway for upward social mobility. It is not only about seeking better opportunities—it can also be a journey of hard work and sacrifice when a migrant strives to earn enough abroad to support their family back home.
Commissioned by PositiveNegatives and funded by the European Research Council, this Manila segment tells the story of a Filipino nurse working in Germany and examines the challenges she faces in balancing personal ambitions with familial responsibilities.
Narrative Overview
Set against a rapidly changing global landscape, the narrative underscores how the simple act of sending care packages can symbolize both support and enduring familial bonds. The story is deeply rooted in research, reflecting how migration influences social mobility across Asia by transforming individual lives and family trajectories.
Jarbrain’s Animation Process
Our process began with meticulous preparation of the illustrator’s Photoshop files. We cleaned up layers, merged outline artwork with solid colours, and segmented key elements—such as arms, legs, and faces—into flexible, puppet-like rigs that allow for smooth, natural movement.
To visually echo the narrative of sending parcels, we developed a distinctive transition effect where the left and right sides of the screen elegantly fold inward, reminiscent of a cardboard box closing.
This visual strategy, combined with the evocative sound design by Richard Hughes and research-informed art direction, ensured that the final animation was both culturally authentic and emotionally engaging.
